A lot of people start their Web marketing journey with PTC (Pay To Click) sites. I, myself, began just that. Let me discuss what a PTC website is for folks who don’t know. A PTC web site pays you a small amount for merely watching a short advert, usually lasting around half a minute or so. Whenever you watch an advertisement, some money is deposited to your account; usually, this must collect to a set amount of money (normally approximately $5) before you are free to take it out. In addition, PTC sites often offer a few additional options for those who are members, and almost all offer referral bonuses.

Whether you gather your referrals yourself or pay for them, when those referrals watch advertisements, you receive approximately half of the money they generate. So, if you are paid a penny from clicking an ad, you’ll get half a penny from your referrals. It sounds like kind of a slow way to go, but imagine what will happen if you have scores of people under you. There are also special membership options that allow you to generate more referrals, more adverts and more money for each click (sometimes for both your own clicks and your referrals’ clicks). Although you might make a little more money with one of the enhanced plans, they mostly cost an a lot up front, so be careful.

To demonstrate how this works, let’s say you register with a PTC program that displays up to four adverts. You purchase a membership and you obtain 1,000 referrals. And let’s assume that both you and your referrals earn one cent per click. That’s $40, if you and all your referrals click on all four advertisements. Doesn’t appear very shabby, right? Not terrible for just a few minutes of you time, agreed?

The reality is, virtually all PTC services are nothing but scams. Basically, Pay-to-Click programs are simply pyramid schemes. They are called “pyramids” because just the folks at or close to the top make any cash, while those lower the pyramid usually end up getting nothing. Here’s an example: If ten people put in ten bucks, that’s one hundred dollars. The scheme starter may return fifteen bucks to 4 people in his down line, leaving the rest of the members out in the cold. How they are able to get away with this is by encouraging people to become members and to purchase referrals (which, incidentally, are usually bots, not genuine people), then paying out cash that other people invest to pay for their own membership and subsequent referrals. Since most of the referrals may simply be bots, and thus non-paying, the cash from viewing ads cannot cover all the pay-outs. Eventually, people will stop investing in the Pay-to-Click site and the last people to invest are not going to see any money. If you’re one of the first people, you may generate some money but it’s not worth risking.

Personally, I would recommend keeping your distance from PTC sites, because the good ones are going to generate you an insignificant amount of money and those that make big money are usually scams, resulting in someone losing out.
